What’s the Difference Between Concealer and Powder? by Nan Demers
In order to use the right cosmetic for your needs, you should know the difference between the various types of concealers and powders and what will look best on you. Retailers like Avon and Clinique carry a line of powder and concealer.
Understanding Concealer
Concealers are used to cover up blemishes, scars or dark circles under the eyes. When covering blemishes, you should always make sure that your skin isn’t sensitive to any of the ingredients, since many concealers designed to cover blemishes contain medication to dry up the problem areas while hiding them. The color for the base is usually yellow or green. Those two shades work better to cover up the purple or red hues in the skin that cause the imperfections. It can be applied with your finger, a brush or a sponge, being careful not to apply too much.
Rosacea is a problem that is best covered by using one in which green is the base color. The green neutralizes the redness in the skin, making it less visible. Mineral type cosmetics are also effective for Rosacea. If the problem is dark circles, either from fatigue or a nutritional deficiency, you should always choose a moisture based one similar to your skin tone, but not too light. The best ones should be moist since they blend better. When covering under eye circles, if they’re too dark, a corrector can be applied before the concealer. Make sure not to use a concealer that’s too dry because it will give a flaky appearance. Because the under eye area has fewer oil glands, a moisturizer should be applied before the concealer.
Understanding Powder
Face powder comes in a variety of colors. You should choose a color that most closely matches your skin tone. Most of the major brands use a yellow as the base color since it compliments most skin tones. However, rose hued and white face powders are available, but should only be used by women with extremely light complexions. This has more than one use and comes in pressed powder and a loose form. For women with extremely oily skin, you can apply a minimal amount of loose powder underneath the foundation, then apply more to control the oil and keep your makeup fresh. A translucent one will help to set your blush and eyeshadow if you apply a light layer after the application. Powder can also be used to set concealer if used moderately.
The mineral variety isn’t a new concept, but is very popular for its excellent coverage. It’s buffed into the skin and evens it out as well as hides imperfections including acne and Rosacea. Some types of mineral powder can be applied to the crease of the eye and on the cheekbones to give it a warm glow. Mineral makeup also can be used to set the foundation by using a light layer. It will keep your makeup looking fresh. For light touch ups during the day, you can apply moisturizer then a light dusting of mineral powder.
